How to reduce the dose of conventional medicines?
Drug based therapy:
The conventional treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia largely comprises of the use of anticonvulsive medication, such as Carbamazepine
((Tegretol®), Phenytoin (Dilantin®), which helps many patients but not all. This
is the first line of treatment. However, Carbamazepine has several adverse
effects. It needs to be taken for a very long period (almost life long) and it can have many side effects. Please click here to check the side effects of Carbamazepine.
Other medicines include: , Gabapentin (Neurontin®), Baclophen (Lioresal®).
Surgical treatment:
a. Microvascular decompression (MVD),
b. Gamma Knife (high-intensity, highly focused radiation) help some for a variable amount of time.
c. RFTC (Radiofrequency thermocoagulation): Invasive procedure, found
effective in most cases but there is a risk of lasting numbness of face. The
pain tends to recur after some months or years, in most cases.
