  Trigeminal Neuralgia  FAQs
Trigeminal Neuralgia is a disease of one of the 13 major brain nerves which controls the facial muscles. Every patient with Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) should make a note of the following:
TN affects one of the sides of face. Most patients have right side affected. No other body parts gets affected due to TN. What are the causes of TN? Current understanding about TN is suggestive of demyelination of the Trigeminal Nerve. It means, eroding of one of the upper layers of the nerve, giving abnormal hypersensitivity to the entire area which is supplied by that nerve. In many cases there may not be such history. Some patients may also give family history of Multiple sclerosis, Brain tumor, or ther neurological disease. I have TN. Does it mean that my child will have it too? No. It is not a rule. What are the symptoms of TN? TN patients present with typical symptoms. Most cases can be diagnose clinically by evaluating the symptoms. The symptoms include moderate to most severe pain which is described as lancinating, electric current like, screwed up feeling, etc. The pain may last for a few seconds to a few hours (in extreme cases).
