    I have been just diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia. What should I know about Trigeminal Neuralgia and its treatment?

    TN affects one of the sides of face. Most patients have right side affected. No other body parts gets affected due to TN.

    What actually happened in TN?
    TN is not fully understood. Current understanding about TN is suggestive of demyelination of the Trigeminal Nerve. It means, eroding of one of the upper layers of the nerve, giving abnormal hypersensitivity to the entire area which is supplied by that nerve.

    No one in my family has TN. How did I get it?
    TN is not necessarily an inherited disease. In some cases we find evident of family history of TN. In many cases there may not be such history. Some patients may also give family history of Multiple sclerosis, Brain tumor, or ther neurological disease.

    I have TN. Does it mean that my child will have it too?
    No. It is not a rule.

    What are the symptoms of TN? TN patients present with typical symptoms. Most cases can be diagnose clinically by evaluating the symptoms. The symptoms include moderate to most severe pain which is described as lancinating, electric current like, screwed up feeling, etc. The pain may last for a few seconds to a few hours (in extreme cases).

    How is TN diagnosed?
    TN can well be diagnosed clinically based on the typical symptoms. It is advisable in all the cases of TN to have a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to examine underlying pathology.
